Reflection2

In the conference, I talked about my problems in giving a title to my report. I first wanted to write my issue as discussing psychological poverty. However, my annotations deviated from it. To read my annotations again, I seemed to find out some connections between them. In annotation1, annotation3 and annotation4; all of them talked about poverty problem with power groups. In these three annotations, they pointed out some problems that caused poverty. For example, exploitation and the imbalance rights and power between the poor and the government or the power group like middleman and rebel army. I have to organize these three annotations with the issue about poverty and imbalance rights. However I could not find a good connection between my annotation2 with others. Professor asked me to read some comments from classmates. Cheryl gave me a comment as follow: ‘Here the “cause” (experiment) and effect (people’s self- perception) let we know that difference between 'the rich' and 'the poor'? No, it was the way that the researcher controls participant's psychology’. She here gave me a new point to think about the relationship between the cause and the effect. Research controlled participant’s mind and made them to feel poor. Because participants knew nothing about the research, if I regretted their innocent as the poor did not understand that they were exploit by others, and used researchers’ control and design toward the research to express the concept about power group control the rights and forces the poor to work or even live, as they wanted. By this way, maybe I can connect my four annotations in the same issue.

2.      I used the word like ‘some problems’ or ‘their expectancy’. Ruby suggested me to explain clearly about what did I actually means about ‘problems’ and ‘expectancy’. I had discussed more about what I wanted to express.
3.      In paragraph three, Jim suggested me to shorter the last eight line to ‘the impact of this erroneous information has taken its toll on the price of banana and hence, the farmer’. He thought that annotation should depend on why I chose this article as annotation. But I wanted to explain my opinion toward this annotation clearly, so I didn’t shorter my annotation.

Power group’s misunderstand will strengthen the low status’ being exploit
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). DPP recently promoted an advertisement which focuses on the price of Taiwanese fruits. In this advertisement, DPP told people that the price of banana was only NT$2 pre kilogram. However, after reporters investigated, the real price of banana was three times higher than that of DPP’s handbill. Banana famers emphasized that the price of NT$2 per kilogram was in June. After the government adopted price adjustment measures and long-term monitoring mechanisms to help farmers deal with a surplus production of bananas; the problem about banana’s low price had been solved temporarily. Price today in the market was at least NT$15 pre kilogram. Banana famers are very worried that people would be confused by this advertisement and therefore misunderstand the price of banana was that low. One of the banana famers told the reporter that DPP could not used the price of inferior bananas as the price of the high- grade ones. This misunderstanding might impact banana’s price, and hence, innocent banana famers.
Power groups’ misunderstanding will influence the people in lower status. Farmers work so hard to cultivate fruit; however they could not decide the price by themselves. Famer knows fruit the most. They cultivate each kind of products, plants by their own hand and can discriminate the standard of the fruit. They should be the person who has the right to decide the price of their labor, but actually, they are not getting what they deserve. On the other hands, middlemen as power group decide the price of famers’ products. They buy farmers’ products at low price in large amount, the price may not equal to the efforts and prime cost that famers put in to their crops. Famers became cheap slaves to help middlemen earned money by their hard working.
In this news, the price that farmers sold to the middlemen was NT$6 per kilogram. However, the market price was NT$15 per kilogram. Although the government had try to raise the price, the famers still could not get profit from that ‘‘NT$15’’. Middlemen and the retail store got most of the benefits from the products; however, farmers’ diligence could not receive the reward they deserve. DPP here misunderstood the price of banana and thus pronounced a wrong advertisement. DPP is as power group who could influence people’s cognition toward price or different information; delivered the wrong information to people that may indirectly help middlemen to exploit the banana famers. People receive the low price in their knowledge and may want to buy the banana at that low price. If middlemen try to satisfy costumer’s expectancy, they must lower their prime cost by buying banana from famers in lower price. This exploit force the famers to sells their products in bad price and cannot earn enough money to prepare for their next cultivation. Power group’s exploit and misunderstand will finally cause the innocent farmers to be the victims.

1.      Jim and Ruby gave me many advices on word choice and correct some mistake in grammar. I changed the word ‘army’ to ‘rebel army’ which could express the image more clearly. Besides, Jim suggested me to use the word ‘compensate’ to replace the word ‘fulfill’ when I discussed the psychological poverty. And I accepted his suggestion.
2.      Ruby suggested me to discuss the character of Denny more clearly so I had tried to describe more images about this character and what I wanted to express by this character. I thought that would help me a lot to explain what I wanted to tell the reader.
3.      In paragraph two, I used the word ‘fatal’ to describe attraction. Jim suggested me to change the word to ‘lethal’ or ‘deadly’. But I still wanted to use the word ‘fatal’ because I thought that attraction actually causes the death of innocence and also the death of rebel army’s conscience.
4.      Ruby suggested me to explain why I quoted the lines tells by Solomon in paragraph three, so I had discussed more about it.
5.      I gave a title to the annotation and wished this title can help me to express what I wanted to say in this annotation.
6.      Jim suggested me that ‘spiritual poverty’ can be better to pair was ‘material poverty’ than ‘psychological poverty’. I didn’t decide which one is better.
---------------------------------------------
‘They said it came from the heart of the earth, to test the heart of the man’. It was the first lines in this movie trailer and also, gave the audiences a concept about this movies’ issue-the misery comes from scrambling for diamond. As we can see in the movie, the rebel army forces black people to collect diamond in a river, however, after they successfully find rare diamonds in that muddy river, they could not keep the diamond as their fortune. They have to hand it in, in addition, they would not have any chance to share any benefit from the diamond and could not get any reward. The black protagonist, Solomon, tried to own this diamond as his fortune secretly and decided to pretend that he didn’t find anything. However, the guarder was aware of his attempt and from then on; Solomon’s destiny was wholly changed.

There are three leading characters in this movie. First on was Solomon, who wanted to use the diamond to support his family departing from the poverty and the life style as slaves. The second was Danny, who was an illegal seller of diamond worked for government official, who regarded rare pink diamond as a great chance that could help him to become rich and depart from the unstable life style. The third one was rebel army who needed that diamond for exchanging fortune to buy better weapons. For three different reasons and different standpoints, this diamond became a fatal attraction not only cause the death of innocent people during their fight, but also cause the death of rebel army’s conscience. In this movie, Solomon as symbol of the poor, who tried to improve his life but exploited by power group. The rebel army was regarded as that power group which forced the poor to be bogged down in poverty. On top of that, Danny was regard as the rich who desire for fortune to compensate his psychological poverty.

Using the connection between Solomon, rebel army and Denny to discuss how society and the rich influence or maybe, cause the poor’s poverty. Solomon said lines to express anguish toward the unfair society and army’s cruelty. ‘My family, my home, I could not lost everything.’ It is just like the voice from poor’s heart to against cruel environment and society that bogged them down to the poverty. Rebel army’s exploitation was the society’s unfriendly environment toward the poor. The poor’s poverty was because they didn’t have power to protect their right and dignity. Who can get the power and the right of management will control the economy condition. That was the right’s unbalance and society’s sternly cool toward poor’s no ability to fight for their rights that cause the poor’s permanent poverty. Beside, the rich didn’t prevent that exploit toward poor was because they also obtain rewards from this unfair condition, and these rewards could just compensate their psychological poverty that always keep them to pursuit more fortune and power.

This news talks about a mistake makes by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). DPP recently announced an advertisement which was focus on the price of Taiwan’s native fruit. In this advertisement, DPP told people that the price of banana was only NT$2 pre kilogram. However, after reporter’s investigated, the real price of banana was three times higher then DPP’s handbill had written. One of the banana famers told the reporter that DPP could not used the price of inferior bananas as the selling price of the high- grade one. This misunderstanding might bring some problems to banana’s price, and finally, innocent banana famers would be the victim of this unreal advertisement.
Power groups’ misunderstanding will cause the influence to the people in lower stander. Famers work so hard to cultivate fruit; however they could not decide the price by themselves. Famer is the person who knows fruit the most. They cultivate each kind of produces by their own hand and can discriminate the stander of the fruit. They should be the person who has right to decide the price of their painstaking care, but actually, they are just become the slave under the power group. Middlemen, as power group decide the price of famers’ products. They buy in famers product by low price in large amount, that price may not compare with the effort and prime cost that famers put in their cultivation. Famers became cheep slave to help middlemen earned money by their hard working.
In this news, the price that famer sell to the middlemen was NT$6 pre kilogram. However, the price sells to the consumer in the market was NT$15 pre kilogram. Middlemen and the retail store got most of the benefit from the product; however, the hardest character could not receive the reward they should receive. DPP here misunderstanding the price of banana and pronounce a wrong advertisement. DPP as another kind of power group and express the wrong information to people may help middlemen to exploit the banana famers. People receive the low price in their knowledge and will want to buy the banana by that low price. If middlemen try to satisfy costumer’s exception, they most lower their prime cost by buying banana from famers in bad price. This exploit force the famers to sells their products in bad price and can not earn enough money to prepare for their next cultivation. Power group’s exploit and misunderstand will finally cause the innocent farmers to be the victim.

DPP mistakes the price of banana in their handbills, banana farmers become the victim

annotation3 Blood Diamond

‘They said it came from the heart of the earth, to test the heart of the man’. It was the first lines in this movie trailer and also, gave the audiences a concept about this movie's issue. As we can see, the army forced black people to collect diamond in a river, however, when they successfully find a rare diamond in that muddy river, they could not own the diamond. They had to hang out what they had discovered, and as we can image, they would not have any chance to share any benefit from the diamond and could not get any reward. The black man who found a rare pink diamond in the trailer was called Solomon. He tried to own this diamond as his fortune secretly and decided to pretend that he didn’t discover anything in the muddy river. However, the guarder observed his attempt and from then on, Solomon’s destiny was wholly changed.

Solomon wanted to use the diamond to support his family departing from the poverty and the life style as slave. For Danny, that rare pink diamond was such a great chance that could help him to being rich. And for the army, they needed that diamond for exchanging fortune, and used that enormous fortune to support their army. For three different reasons, this diamond became a fatal attraction. In this movie, I regarded Solomon as an impression of the poor, who tried to improve his life but exploited by power group. The army was regarded as that power group which forced the poor to be their slaves and made them to sink into the poverty. On top of that, I regard Danny as the rich who desire for power and fortune to fulfill his psychological poverty.

In the movie, Solomon tried any way to keep that diamond just as the poor’s hard working. He said lines to express anguish toward the unfair society and army’s cruelty. ‘My family, my home, I could lost everything.’ Army’s exploitation was the society’s unfriendly environment toward the poor. The poor’s poverty was because they didn’t have power to protect their right and respect. Who can get the power and the right of management, and then who can control the economy condition. The rich didn’t satisfy with their life, their psychological poverty cause their pursuit of fortune.

Reflection1

In my annotation1 and annotation2, I tried to find some articles or video to talk about the psychological poverty. In the beginning, I wanted to analyze some poverty problem in this society. However, my poverty problem was almost focusing on the rich. I want to express my idea about their purpose to make money so hard was because the psychology of poverty, and people’s never satisfied with their life style. First to talk about my issue with teacher and after I read some peer critiques, I found that my issue had a problem- it was to be holding a little extreme view. Because what I want to discuss is about the psychological poverty, however, it did not fair if I used the same view to apply it to the poor. I could not say that the poor desire for fortune or eager for money was also because of their psychological poverty. Sometimes, it was the reality condition that causes them to pursue money. The poor need money to change their life style and help them to depart from poverty; and also, they need fortune to support their basic life. After all, no one wants to live as poverty in the whole life. ‘Why some people are still poor? That was because the environment doesn't permit them to be rich!’ I got this opinion from Angel, and it really helped me and encouraged me to confer another aspect of poverty; that was the poverty that happened on the poor and I tried to connect it with the rich’s psychological poverty and the exploit from society and the power groups.

For the reason I talked above, I rewrite my annotatin1 again. I watch the video Muhammad Yunus - Grameen Bank again. When I watched this video at the first time, I focused on the example of being a slave. But this time, I tried to watch this video in another new point-to focus on the connection between the poor and what cause their poverty. Yunus express that the reason why the woman in his story needed to take out usurious loans for buying bamboo, to pay their profits to the moneylenders. I thought that the exploit from her moneylenders was also a kind of psychological poverty. Moneylenders must understand that woman’s terrible economy condition; however, they still lent her money with usurious loans. Their usurious loans cause the woman’s poverty, and also, fulfill their psychological poverty. From this point, I found a new connection that I was interesting in, I want to discuss the condition that cause the poor’s poverty and at the same time, fulfill the rich’s desire of fortune and their psychological poverty.

So far, analyzing my annotation1 and annotation2, I find two aspects. First is that why the rich with their huge fortune but still desire for power, space and money. The answer of this condition was psychological poverty, and that psychological poverty was come from comparing themselves with others. Second, the poor’s poverty may come from society’s exploit. The next step I want to do is try to combine these two kinds of poverty together and to find out some evidences to prove my opinion. I want to choose the movie ‘Blood Diamond’ as my next annotation. I will try to use some impress in this movie to prove my idea toward the poverty between the rich and the poor.

In the conference, teacher suggested me to think about what kind of conclusion I want to write in the end of my report. Do I want to solve this condition or I want to express a new point toward poverty. I will think about this soon after I finish all my annotations.

Revise Annotation1

1.      I try to alter my title, the title I used before can not express what I want to say in this annotation, so I write another title to change it.
2.      I read the advice from teacher and give me some new idea that I didn’t think before in this annotation. I will try to discuss it. It is about why poor people keep living in poor life style, and the connection with the rich and the society.
3.      I want to talk about nowadays money slave, and make more examples to prove it.
4.      I have corrected some spelling error and some mistakes in grammar.
-----------------------

Poverty was not cause by the poor but by the society and psychology poverty
In this society, people keep working hard for money. But, why people always desires for fortune and power? Do we really need such lots of money to prevent from being poor? Many news about doctors’ overworks which cause their death gradually be heard, on top of that, some areas in Africa which once to be the colonies are always in the condition of poverty. They do not have any vacant lot to plant foods, every area in their country were used to plant for economical crops like cotton and hemp. Human being works so hard to giant their fortune not for the short of substance, but for their true poverty of their psychology- they will never satisfied with what they have already own.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPk2gRuIdj0&feature=player_embedded
In the video: Muhammad Yunus - Grameen Bank, he talked about economical activities in rural village. Women who made bamboo furniture had to take out usurious loans for buying bamboo, to pay their profits to the moneylenders. Here express a question that is always happening in all over the world. The poor keep working hard and try to depart from poverty, however sometimes, it is not their fault to being poor; it means that the poor living style is not made by them. It is because the society system and vicious oppression from powerful group as their boss or the businessmen that causes their terrible economy condition. For example, not only the woman’s story which Yunus talked in the video, but also the diamond industry in Africa. I saw a movie called Blood Diamond before, and it was talking about the serious problems of illegal diamond collection in Africa. The diamond has become the cause of fight between government soldiers and rebel forces. To the rebel forces, diamond is the source of income for war, therefore, many people has lost their calm live, family relatives and even their own limbs in the war. Thousands of people became refugee. The children soldiers were killed in the war, diamond miners were living a depressing life, those plots in the film actually exist, and some are under an even worse condition. Diamonds may bring people wealth and happiness, but it brought people in Africa war and suffers. What is the reason that causes the diamond miners’ poverty? It is the same reason as the example that Yunus has expressed- the exploit from the powerful group and the man who manage the economic. Society keeping exploits the poor and cause their poverty. Their hard working still cannot bring them depart from terrible economic problem. The same condition also happens in Taiwan, it is about the rights of banana famers.

Besides, Yunus made an example by being a slave to explain how terrible the economy condition in Bangladesh. That woman was willing to accept this kind of deal to exchange for money; she was in force to do that because of the poverty that may cause her family’s starvation. When I see this video, I thought that not only she, but all of us were the slave for fortune. But the different between people in developed country and that woman is the reason they desired for money. That woman needed money to get some food and maintained her basic life, how about people in developed country, why they also became the slave of money? Do they short of food? No, it was because they didn’t satisfied with their life and always desired for more power and more space to live.

There are two different terms that cause different poverty. For the rich, it is the psychological poverty that makes them feel the lake of power and fortune; but for the poor, it was the fatal society condition that cause their poverty which may force them to hand over their life.

Revise Annotation2

1.      I give a title to my annotation and tell the reader what I want to talk about in this article annotation. It is about a reason that I think can cause psychology poverty- comparing with others.
2.      After reading some advices from classmates, I get some new concepts toward buying lottery tickets. Not only the poor, but also the rich will buy lottery tickets. Besides, poverty may not be the only reason why people want to buy lottery tickets.
3.      I try to describe that I do not see psychology poverty as a crime or a bad thing. Everyone has their own goal; to fulfill their poverty in mind can also be a life destination.
4.      I have corrected my spelling error and some mistakes in grammar.
------------------

Psychology of Poverty comes from comparing with others
Some people may think that they are poor; they cannot fulfill themselves by their present life style. Why they classify themselves as poor come from the target they use to compare with themselves. It is impossible that everyone can become the rich like the boss of big company or get huge power like a president. If we compare our incomes with these bosses or chairmen, we absolutely can be defined as the poor. However, if we can change our judgment toward the definition of rich, if we try to satisfy with what we have already owned, including the affection, the happy in our life; then we must be the rich one.

In the article: Psychology of Poverty: Why Poor People Buy Lottery Tickets, the researcher has already made a trap and lead participants to feel their conditions which researcher expect them to perceive. In our real-life, what make us feel our poor? We can easily receive a lot of information about fashion, brand, celebrities’ luxury and the cost of their house and their clothes. Media just like the researcher in the article which gives us a way to feel our insufficient in material life; and people who receive these information and desire for it are compared as the participants in the research. They fall into the disorientation of material life and look themselves as the poor. People are easily influenced by external factor and will compare themselves with what they admire. Although the condition may not be that worse, pessimistic impression has already hid their eyes to look at the bright side of their life. It is a kind of psychology of poverty that many people may commit.

Poor people work hard for life. In some condition, desire for money is not just want to fulfill for material life, it is also for surviving. How about the rich? All of us will have a goal in our life, and also we cannot identify what kind of goal is better or what kind of life destination is worse. The rich do not satisfy with what they have owned and desire for more power and space may be their life goal. They may try to challenge themselves and try to prove their ability. If they use their way to fulfill psychological poverty, then they may have a chance to find the value of life and the value of themselves. To find the value of the life is also a way to decrease to psychological poverty, because that means our psychology can find the destination and get confidence from it. Here I get another conclusion: human being is poor because of their psychological poverty, but also, they can rich their mind by trying to decrease their psychological poverty.

annotation2 Buying lottery tickets for hope and fulfill the desire

In the article: Psychology of Poverty: Why Poor People Buy Lottery Tickets; it talks about a research which compares the action and desire for buying lottery tickets with income. It was interesting how the researchers differentiate between the rich and the poor. They want the participants to decide whether they are rich or poverty by themselves. The researchers influenced participants' perceptions of their relative wealth — or lack thereof — by having them complete a survey on their opinions of the city of Pittsburgh that included an item on annual income. The group made to feel poor was asked to provide its income on a scale that began at "less than $100,000" and went upward from there in $100,000 increments, ensuring that most respondents would be in the lowest income category. The group made to feel subjectively wealthier was asked to report income on a scale that began with "less than $10,000" and increased in $10,000 increments, leading most respondents to be in a middle or upper tier. After participants completed their survey, participants, who were recruited at Pittsburgh's Greyhound Bus terminal, were paid $5 for completing the survey and given the opportunity to buy as many as five scratch-off lottery tickets. The experimental group purchased an average of 1.27 lottery tickets, compared with 0.67 tickets bought by the members of the control group.
Comparing people who thought that they were poor with those who thought they were wealthy, ''the poor'' got double chance then ''the rich'' to buy lottery tickets. However, is there really having such difference between 'the rich' and 'the poor'? No, it was the way that the researcher controls participant's psychology. After reading this article, I think that the point of view how people conclude themselves is by comparing themselves with others. It is impossible that every one can be a millionaire or make profit as much as a chairman who manages a huge company. People used to look up to their goal, but the goal is too far away from their own conditions, they feel that they are poverty because the targets are too hard to get. Isn't it a kind of poverty that comes from human being's psychology?
According to the U.S. lottery management statistics in the United States, every year at least eight of the one million U.S. dollars and 10 million dollars prize of the "lottery millionaire", have now been returned to the starting point. Another track data also pointed out that big lottery jackpot winner, as the millionaire's life of an average of 7 to 8 years, that is, after eight years, the majority of lottery winners are bankrupt, and the final life is worse then he got first prize before. The man who won the firsr prize must got enough money to live his life, why he finally lost his fortune in the end? Money can not satisfy people, we always want more and cannot satisfy with what we have already owned. Psychology of poverty hunting people in their mind!

Issue Paper 1st Draft

After discussing with teacher and classmates last week, I found that my issue was too large for me to research. What I really want to discuss and the video I was intereating in were about poverty and didn't have any connect with crime. So I decide to focus on poverty.
When we were young, our parents always wished us and also, taught us to be a person who was ''successful''. What was the meaning of  ''successful''? Most of them may give us an answer: To being rich. On top of that, I take a course about the meaning of Buddhism literature in this semester. When teacher was talking about karma, he said that the every decisions and choices we make in our life will decide what kind of life will we live after we reborn again. The example of that different life he told us was: rich or poverty.  Many news about doctors’ overwork which caused their death gradually be heard. Their family members cried out for hospital's fatal system which caused their dearly relative had to work over ten hours a day and finally death of overwork themselves. There was another example for doctors' overwork which made them loose their health. A doctor suddenly  had apoplexy when he was giving an operation to his patient, after his awake, he could not recognize  his wife who has a son with him. His wife asked hospital for 38 million NT dollors to indemify their lost. She thought that the reason which caused his husband's apoplexy was overwork. Why should they work so hard, and why people are always desire for being rich?
In the video I shared before:  Muhammad Yunus- Grameen Bank, Yunus talked about poverty problem in Bangladesh. I was interesting in his idea about Grameen Bank, I first read the information  about his idea about poverty was in an economic weekly periodocal. Yunus got Nobel Piece Prize that year and he gave people a new principle about poverty. He thought that the poor was not willing to being poor, what cause their poverty was the society and justice that was judged by the nation with power and fortune. When I first read this word, I got a question: If basic life conditions cause people in undeveloped country desire for money, for us, people live in developed country with sufficient substance life style, why we always desire for money, power and space? Do we really need such lots of money to prevent ourselves from being poor?
Face the question about why we work so hard to giant money? Some may answer that they don't want to fall in the circle of poverty. I don't think that was the real reason, the truth of keeping pursue material life is that people  will never satisfy with what they have already own. The true poverty is not their life; the true poverty is in their heart- their psychological poverty. In this society, fashion, brand and luxury are advocated by celebrities and media. People keep working hard for money and fortune just for earning their 'space'. Not only house or the place to live but also the power space which can give them a title of their fame like doctor who or professor who; and also, the boss. I will discuss some conditions from book and news to support my idea of psychological poverty.

Muhammad Yunus : Poverty was not created by the poor

annotation1 what is the real poverty?

Why people keep working hard for money? The true poverty in this society.
In the video which Muhammad Yunus talked about Grameen Bank, he makes an example by being a slave to explain how terrible the economy condition in Bangladesh. That woman was willing to accept this kind of deal to exchange for money; she was in force to do that because of the poverty that may cause her family’s starvation. When I see this video, I thought that not only she, but all of us were the slave for fortune. But the different between people in developed country and that woman is the reason they desired for money. That woman needed money to get some food and maintained her basic life, hoe about people in developed country, why they also became the slave of money? Do they short of food? No, it was because they didn’t satisfied with their life and always desired for more power and more space to live.

The source of the crime- the relationship between poverty and crime.

Some people may seem that poverty is the most important reason that causes crimes and security problems, but, is that the reality source of the crime?  I do not really think so. When we read the newspaper or get some criminal  imformations from news, we can easily find  some criminals that committed crimes with great education backgrounds and wonderful incomes. I will find some evdiences or consepts from book- Russian literature ''Crime and Punishment'' and some vedio to analyze the relationship between poverty and crime. I do not mean that poverty will not causes the crime, but I do not agree that proverty is equal to capable of commit the crime.
